Alternative Provision

Wild Explorers Alternative Provision

Wild Explorers AP is a Specialist Alternative Provision for children in Year 1 – Year 11 who find mainstream education difficult to access.  We are an outdoor provision based in a woodland on the Broughton Hall Estate, just outside Skipton, North Yorkshire.
We offer:
  • A child led and therapeutic environment
  • Social emotional mental health (SEMH) support
  • Outdoor and Interest based curriculum
  • Maths, English & topic based learning
  • AQA Unit Awards Scheme and GCSE work also available

What age children can attend?

We can take children from Year 1 through to Year 11. (Please note this age range of children would not be accessing the provision in the same space at the same time).

What days / times can children attend?

Currently the AP is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during term time from 9:30am – 2:30pm. We hope to increase this to five days per week in the near future.

What does the environment offer?

Physical setting
The physical setting is the same as our Wild Explorers Holiday Club – your child will still enjoy time in the woodland, have use of the hammocks, craft and tool area, tipi etc and space to climb play and explore. Play, especially for the younger children, will be fundamental to what we offer.
Group Size
The group sizes will be significantly smaller with higher staff to child ratios. We will have additional educational opportunities which are detailed below.
Indoor space
Additionally, we will be using an inside classroom space we can retreat to in the winter months when needed, and also offer classroom-based activities including AQA Unit Awards, Maths, English, Art and other subjects the children may be interested in at a pace that suits them.
Field space – future ambitions
Future ambitions include the use of a field space, where we would like to grow fruit and vegetables and have small animals so we can offer horticulture and animal husbandry for the children to learn about.

Which children would benefit from Wild Explorers AP?

Children who struggle in a mainstream setting. Reasons may include:
  • Emotional Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
  • Behavioural Challenges
  • Mental Health difficulties (i.e. anxiety, trauma)
We can offer 1:1 care for children who need it. Our setting will provide a low demand environment which is well suited for children who struggle to engage in a mainstream school setting.

Does my child need to have an ECHP?

In short, no! We are happy to accept any child that would benefit from some time at our setting. This may be a day a week to help them regulate before returning to the classroom, for example. We also appreciate the benefit of being proactive in supporting a child before reaching a stage of school avoidance or exclusion.

How will the children spend their days?

Initially, our priority will be ensuring the children feel safe, settled and regulated. Our environment lends itself very well to this. Once they are ready, children can work towards AQA Awards in a range of topics. We will offer an outdoor education curriculum as well as subjects offered via the National Curriculum such as Maths, English, Art and Science. We will have the flexibility to follow the child’s interests which will help foster engagement and enjoyment.
